Labrador Retriever GamesLabs love to play games with you so why not learn about a few! Labrador Retrievers have a lot of energy and it is important that they find a healthy way of using it up. Many dogs, when left to their own devices, can become mischievous. You don’t want that to happen to your Lab. Learning a few simple games to play with your Lab will help the relationship between the two of you. It is yet another great way to build the bond that you share. It is easy to tell when your Labrador is in the mood for a game or two. Like other dogs, its front paws will no doubt be laid out in front with its backside slightly up in the air (as if ready to pounce). Its ears will be upright and extremely sensitive to sound and then there’s the tail that will not stop wagging! Labradors can almost demand that you play with them. Sometimes you may find that he will come up to you with a toy and drop it on your lap as if to say ‘Come on, I want to play’. Even though you may not be in the mood to play all of the time you should not always shun the efforts made by your little friend. Here are few fun games for the two of you!
RetrievingThis is a very simple game and probably the best known out of all the dog games. Retrieving requires an object that is light enough for a Labrador to carry and one that is not sharp or in any way potentially harmful to your dog.The rules of the game are simple. You simply throw the object and your Labrador retrieves it. My Lab, Tasha, does not like giving it back and he enjoys putting up a fight before surrendering to me. But once he has lost he gets ready for another retrieval.
WrestlingNot like the contact sport we see on the television this form of Wrestling involves minimal contact and no Powerslams!Wrestling with your Lab can be really good fun. The basic idea is that you lay down on the floor or at least get to the same ‘level’ as your Labrador. Then you begin to ‘play wrestle’. This means that you do not exert too much force on your pet. Do not make him feel like it is a punishment of any kind. Finally, any attempt at doggy sounds is usually greatly appreciated and will get him more involved.
Hide and SeekA classic game for many of us. Hide and Seek will give your Labrador the chance to ‘sniff’ you out!Simply find a good hiding place and then call your Lab. If he is ready to play chances are he will on to you in a flash, picking up your scent and making a mockery of your hiding places!
TagGreat for the outdoors, Tag is a game that involves plenty of physical exercise. You chase your Labrador for a while and then run away so he chases you. Then grab a spot on the sofa and relax!
A great way to end any of the games above is to either sit down if you have been running around or simply change what you are doing. Some Labs love a quick belly rub and others agree that play time is over and just want to have a nap on the couch.
Dog Food RecipeEvery month we are going to try and prepare a fun recipe for you to try out at home. If anyone has a recipe to share with us feel free to sent it in Easy on the Teeth This is a great recipe which is both very easy to prepare and will also be very healthy for your Labrador. Ingredients
Directions Cook brown rice until it is just underdone, leaving some crunchiness in consistency. Combine all the ingredients in an airtight container, mixing until well blended. Store in refrigerator.
Give this recipe a try and let us know how it went. Did your Labrador want more?
In The NewsDesigner Dogs The world media recently covered a story about a new phenomenon taking place in The USA. It appears that there are many people who are getting a bit bored with the incredible selection of dogs available to them and they have been demanding something new. Breeders have come up with some answers. Three breeds in particular have been publicised by the media. The 'Cockapoo' (Cocker Spaniel with Poodle), the 'Labradoodle' (Labrador Retreiver with Poodle) and the 'Puggle' (Pug with Beagle). Although these new breeds may look adorable there is plenty of scepticism about their health.
Sceptics are particularly worried about the health and well being of the 'Puggle'. This mix between a Pug and Beagle is worrying because the Beagle is known for its ability to find ways to keep itself in trim condition, whereas the Pug is known for its laziness!
Dog Chewing ProblemsDog chewing problems is something that every dog owner must face. This dog chewing problem is very normal but must be dealt with immediately before it gets out of hand.
The first and easiest way to start dealing with it is …
