How much should a four year old male yellow lab normally weigh?

Question

Well, my sister says that my 4 year old yellow lab is starting to get chubby. I don't know exactly how much he is supposed to weigh so i need your help to get tips to get him more active and slim.

Answer

An average for a male adult labrador retriever would be about 70lbs, however there are some that can grow to a larger weight.

Labs are very big dogs.

As long as you are feeding your labrador correctly and giving him the exercise he needs he is probably the right weight.

However if you are concerned at all take him to a vet and make sure that he is the right size.

If he is just a little chubby I would not worry, just give him a little bit more exercise and play with him.

He will love the extra play if he is anything like our Tasha :)

Lab Weight
by: Candy

We have raised 4 labs over the past 29 years.

Two lived to be 17 yrs and we now have one 7 yrs and one 7 months.

Our first AKC lab was Boo he was a small lab, thin framed head and small bone frame. He never weighed more than 55 pounds and he lived 17 years.

Shadow was HUGE. Big square boxed head and feet like a lion. At his prime he weighed 97 pounds and was not 'chubby'. He was as strong as an ox and could push his head through the bottom of a chain link fence and then lift up with it on his neck and bend the chain link so badly it had to be replaced and could not be bent back. Shadow also lived 17 years.

Janko is now 7 yrs and now weighs 65 pounds. His weight varies between summer and winter, weighing about 75 pounds in the winter. He has a medium bone structure and weighs about 6 pounds lighter now that a gator took off his tail. (See my Janko page on this site)

Arlo is 7 months old, was the runt of 12 puppies, weighed 30 pounds at 12 weeks and now weighs 70 pounds.

His father is HUGE. He is large framed and has a beautiful square head. Arlo is very active but is the CALMEST lab we have ever known. He would sit on command at 12 weeks and stay until dismissed.

He is so well behaved we have him in Therapy Dog training.

I guess what I am trying to say is all labs are different. You know your dog better than anyone else. If he is agile and eating good, you can tell where his neck and body meet and his belly isn't wider than his hips, chances are he's okay.

If you continue to worry by all means ask your vet; labs can live a very long life if cared for properly and you will have many years of total devotion and love.

Editors Note: Thank you for that great answer Candy! It always makes me happy to read personal notes from people that clearly love their pets very much!

The information is so helpful, im not the one who asked the question. I am a new lab owner and was wanting to be responsible and not let my guy get to heavy. He is 5 months old and wieghs 45 lbs, he looks lean and strong. I think he could pull a snow sled easily in the adideron )
He gets mad if we dont go for our 4 am run and our 9pm run walk. Dog stays healthy mom gets healthy, win win

Thanks again

Huge Yellow Lab
by: Anonymous

We have a 4 year old Yellow Lab male who is 135 pounds at last weigh in. He is also about 3.5 feet tall standing on all fours. Has anyone had or heard of one that big?
