Your Friendly LabLet's look at the Labrador retriever breed from another angle, for those of you who still haven’t decided whether or not to buy/adopt one. There are various things which need to be looked at before deciding what the best breed would be for you and your family. If you are looking for a guard dog, then we would advise that the this is not the breed you are looking for. They do not have the protective instincts that a Rottweiler has. However, if you want an ‘alarm’ dog this could be the dog for you. They will bark if someone is outside where he cannot see or if he hears a strange noise. He will also bark when a car pulls up the driveway, but once the people enter the house they are greeted and welcomed like family members.
Good breeding is the key. Even though your Lab may accidentally knock over a child with his incredibly strong, happy tail, you will not have to worry about him attacking or biting in a protective manner. It is not part of his makeup. So if you have children a these friendly retrievers could be the right choice for you, as long as there is always adult supervision, between young children and dogs.
They can, in cases, be stubborn but can be easily persuaded to see things your way with encouragement and praise. They will work for food rewards but just as eagerly or more for your praise. If you have time or maybe children who would be willing, another good point for Labrador retrievers is that they love to have something to carry around, and playing fetch is usually a favorite game. So basically, what we are saying is that their friendliness, there good temperament, their playfulness and the fact that they are smart is why they have become one of the best and most wanted family pets! Convinced?
