Alopecia in Dogs – What causes it and how to recognise it.

January 4, 2013 By All About Labradors

The condition known as Alopecia affects the hair basically resulting in extreme hair loss in areas where there would usually be hair in abundance. It is, in effect, a very serious skin disease.

The lack of hair in an area where it usually grows can be caused by chewing, scratching, self trauma and even the failure of hair to grow back after normal loss. Some dogs enjoy rubbing themselves against objects that are solid and will eventually cause hair loss. Examples include the undersides of beds, tables, staircases and even railings.

Dogs can get this disease in different areas of the body. If it is flea related the usual areas are the back, hind legs, rump, belly and tail. Whereas a scabies related contraction will more likely affect the feet, elbows and ears.

Being in touch with what your Labrador is doing and how it is looking after its body is important. This is because you have the responsibility of making sure it doesn’t hurt itself.

If you think that your Labrador maybe suffering from hair loss and is showing signs that it may be self inflicted then inform your veterinarian. Be prepared for a number of questions and make sure you answer them as best as you can.
