The Labradoodle – Labrador and Poodle mix

January 4, 2013 By All About Labradors

The labradoodle has recently been exposed to the ‘doggie’ world due to the new term ‘designer dogs’. Although this adorable mix between a standard poodle and a labrador has been around since the 1970’s it has never really gained much popularity.

Although this adorable mix between a standard poodle and a labrador has been around since the 1970’s it has never really gained much popularity. However, in more recent years it low allergy coat has become very useful and its popularity has grown.

They are highly intelligent and very easy to train. Due to this they are excellent guide dogs and therapy dogs. They are also non-aggressive and very sociable.

Their coats are low allergy and do not shed. As a result their coat does not have a strong odour.

They have a larger build than the standard poodle and are available in three sizes. Standard, Medium and Miniature.

Standard: Height 21 – 24 inches

Medium: Height 18 – 23 inches

Miniature: Height 17 – 20 inches

These fantastic dogs have many colours, black, apricot, chocolate, silver, chalk, cream and cafe au lait. The coat is between 4 to 6 inches in length and can be either wavy or curly.

They have a life expectancy of between 13 – 15 years. They are great companions and do offer many labrador traits. However, breeding is still ongoing in Australia to try and solve some of the health issues that have affected these labrador mixes since their conception.
