Litter Training – An Introduction

January 4, 2013 By All About Labradors

Litter Training – Both easy and effective

By using Litter Training your labrador won’t get embarrassed when he has an accident.

Although Labradors are generally excellently behaved there are the odd occasions when accidents happen. This upsets them and they feel like they have done something very wrong. They often hide or act a bit upset because of this.

By introducing litter training you can help your dog feel more secure about ‘eliminating’ indoors. As dogs get older they may need to ‘eliminate’ more often. If you work away from home and your labrador is in the house for long periods of time this training can solve many problems.

Litter Training is a great solution for the two of you. Once training is completed you will have peace of mind while you are not at home.

As with Dog Commands training should start as soon as possible. Puppies will learn very quickly and this will mean that they will get used to ‘going’ whenever they need to.

To begin you will need a litter box and cleaning supplies.

Use the cleaning supplies to completely remove any odours and stains that your labrador may have already made. This is an important part of the training process as your lab should get used to finding their scent in one place in a designated area, not everywhere.

If you are trying to train a dog that is already housebroken the process may take a bit more time. Many dogs do not understand what exactly is going on once they have been trained to do something a certain way and then you try and change it.

Cleaning the litter itself is very simple and all you need to do is empty it all into a rubbish bag. Solids can be scooped and put in the rubbish bag aswell.

Do not dispose of your labs solids down the toilet. They can block the pipes and get very messy!

Remember to be patient during Litter Box Training. Once you have finished you will have a labrador that feels comfortable about ‘eliminating’ while you are away.

Check out this book I have found on Litter Box Training your dog!

Are you:

  • Physically unable to take your dog outdoors?
  • Frustrated and upset because the dog housetraining you’re doing now is NOT working very well?
  • Burned out from loss of sleep due to midnight puppy potty training trips?
  • Discouraged because you tried litter box training your dog & failed?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the book for you!
