Dog Diseases – The usual suspects

January 4, 2013 By All About Labradors

Major Dog Diseases investigated for you!

Read about what dog diseases could affect your Labrador and how to avoid and cure them.

Parainfluenza

The common name for this contagious disease is ‘kennel cough’. It is known to spread in kennels especially among un-vaccined dogs. Being a cough related disease it does affect the respiratory system and signs and symptons include high fever and extreme bouts of coughing.

A vaccined Labrador should not contract a disease like this but if you notice any symptons get in touch with your vet immediately. A complete recovery when dealt with quickly is practically a certainty.

Rabies

This is a fatal disease and attacks the dogs nervous system. It is a very dangerous disease and an infected dog will be a danger to everyone around. Any dog with it should be put down by a vet immediately.

This vicious disease is transmitted via saliva from other infected animals. Signs of rabies include (usually in this order) melancholy, depression, irritation and lastly, paralysis.

To avoid your dog suffering from this horrific disease arrange shots with your veterianarian. Depending on where you live laws concerning rabies may differ so it would be a good idea to check them out.

Canine Hepatitis

One of the more fast acting and deadly dog diseases, Canine Hepatitis should not be taken lightly. If your dog is experiencing drowsiness, loss of appetite, high temperature and excessive thirst then there is a chance it may have this dangerous disease.

The swelling of certain parts of the body may also occur. These are more often the neck, abdomen and head. In some cases vomiting has also been reported.

Being a fast acting disease makes it very difficult to diagnose and then cure. The most secure way of preventing it is by inoculation. Puppies should receive a shot for Canine Hepatitis. Be sure to arrange annual boosters with your veterinarian.

Parvovirus

This is another contagious disease. It concentrates on attacking the white blood cells, intestinal tract and the heart muscle. Once again, inoculations should be taken to avoid contracting it.

Leptopirosis

A disease that affects the kidneys, it can be contracted from urine from other dogs. Symptoms include yellow colouring of the jaws, tongue and the teeth. This happens because the kidneys become inflamed. In this instance vaccines are determined depending on the level of risk.

Distemper

One of the most unpleasant dog diseases. It involves loss of appetite, fever, depression and chills. Furthermore there may be watery discharge coming from the eyes and nose. Noticing symptoms early is very important because if the disease gains momentum it can begin infecting the lungs, intestines and the nervous system.

Once again look to book annual boosters and make sure an initial inoculation was carried out during puppyhood.
