My new very fat lab

September 29, 2013 By All About Labradors

My new very fat lab

I bought a 3 year old lab this weekend. She is AKC registered, current on all shots but is very very very fat.

Before I spend the money taking her to the vet I thought I would ask you guys if there is anything I need to look for, or should I just put her on a diet, and lots of exercise?

Everything in moderation!
by: CAndy My husband and I have owned labs for over 30 years. Three of our labs have passed away; ages 15, 17 & 18.

We currently own two labs, one 11 yrs and one two yrs.

The two yr old is my service dog. We feed them once a day; dog food only! (Except for an occasional treat of banana for my younger dog)

Due to allergies our 11 yr old is on grain-free food (it is expensive!)

The others were fed a good brand such as Pedigree.

We always make sure there is LOTS of exercise- a favorite is fetch with the tennis ball.

We also make sure they have PLENTY of water, for drinking and laying in! (We keep a ‘kiddie pool’ in the back yard during the summer)

I check their ears and paws once a week; keeping both clean and trimmed. REGULAR VET VISITS ARE VITAL!!!

Keeping up to date shots for Rabies and Bordetella, along with flea & heartworm treatments.

Your local AKC club offers training classes in obedience and agility along with high intensity exercise classes like flyball.

All of these are well worth the $$ & time involved.

Labs are VERY energetic and need LOTS of exercise and attention; if they don’t get it they will start DESTROYING everything they come in contact with! 🙂

You will never find a more loving and loyal friend and every moment you spend with your lab means more to them than you could ever know!

fat lab
by: Anonymous I now own my third lab, this one a black male.
After training class I signed him up for agility class. The teacher told me he would never be able to make the jumps if he continued at his weight. When asked how much I fed him, the teacher was aghast. He told me to cut his food in half, which I confirmed with his vet. Beau is now svelte and beautiful. My advice would be to not follow the directions on the bag – it is simply too much food. Also, lots of exercise and water. Good luck.
