Question
I’m thinking about getting a labrador after xmas, I’ve always wanted one just never had the time to look after one.
Now i have got plenty of time to look after it I’m not sure if I should get a black one or a brown one, is there many differences between the two?
Answer
Your choice will come down to your preference as they are both exactly the same breed, they have just had small changes in their genes which has caused a change in their coat colour.
A litter of labradors can have labs of any of the three colours, black, chocolate or yellow.
There is no other difference in intelligence, temperament or personality.

which lab color to choose
Question
I am looking to get a lab and I prefer the look of the chocolate.
I have, however, had a lot of people tell me that the chocolate labs are dumb and nowhere near as smart as the black or yellow.
Is there any truth to this and if they are is it so significant that training would be a problem?
Answer
I only have experience with our black lab Tasha, however have researched this for you. From my findings I would definitely say that even though people suggest that chocolate labs are less intelligent the literature shows nothing to prove this.
I think colour bares no influence on the intelligence of a dog. Intelligence will depend on the individual dog, his genes and the training provided.
I love chocolate labs, they are so cute!!
Does anyone own a chocolate lab? We would love to hear your thoughts ๐

i just bought a choc lab, shes 8 weeks old, shes very ‘chewy’ but absolutely gorgeous, she loves the children, all four of them, and of course they love her, when we took her home she wasn’t a bit scared, she just fitted right in, like she’d always been here, the only problem is we are stuck on names, we were going along with the chocolate theme, eg. buttons, star ( majic) etc, so far got fudge but im still unsure, def didn’t want co co, 99% of choc labs are called that lol! any ideas?

Choc Labs Are Not Less Intelligent by: Marianne I breed and own 3 choc labs. We have akc breeders and friends that have black, yellow, and choc. In the many years we have owned labs all are chocolate, I’ve never seen intelligent issues just by the different colors, actually my oldest female and youngest are champion bird dogs. |

Chocolate Labs are very smart by: Carol We have a 2 year old chocolate lab and love her to pieces. MY brother-in-law and niece also own chocolate and yellow labs and find that all of them have no intelligence issues. Our lab is great and while I don’t find her hyper she is a bundle of energy and it takes lots of playing from the whole family to give her all the exercise she needs. This is the first lab we have owned and can’t believe the difference in this breed compared to all the others we have had(cocker spaniel, collie, English setter mix, collie/golden retriever). My 14 year old daughter taught her a series of tricks in just a matter of a month or two. She can speak, whisper, sit pretty, shake paws, give high five, to name a few of our favorites. She has been very easy to train and picks up what we are trying to teach after being rewarded once. She is also very sensitive and sniffles when my daughter goes away overnight. Yes, chocolate labs are just as smart as others and I believe it has more to do with the breeding than anything else. I have seen some yellow labs that weren’t too smart but others that are amazing. |

My Monty by: M i have never owned a dog before and when it was finally time for me to be able to have one fate introduced me to my Monty. I was also told that brown labs are stupid, i can safely say that my Monty is definitely not! at 8 months old he is so very well behaved, he is the star of the puppy training classes, he is so good natured, and its a surprise to us if he barks. he makes me so happy when i see him. quite simply, i just love him! |

Choc lab by: Anonymous We have a 12 month old choc lab. This is our first lab but have a lot of experience with golden retrievers. Ali is a great dog. From our experiences we found that Ali shows no aggression towards other dogs, but does show aggression towards strangers. Apart from that, Ali appears as intelligent as our retrievers. We trust her with our children 100%. The only difference to our retrievers is the colour really. |

Depends on the strain by: Anonymous Almost all the Chocolate labs I’ve encountered are as dumb as biscuits but there’s a reason for this. Almost all are show bred, so you don’t have the leaner, sharper working/field sorts you find among the yellow and blacks. That said, I’ve handled two working Chocolate bitches and they were very smart indeed. However, they’re also rarer than Irish Coffees at Mitt Romney’s Thanksgiving dinner, but I’m finding show bred Labs of any color dimwits these days; they’re of little use beyond eating, cuddling and breaking wind of the most noxious sort. |
